My Visit To Osceola Cheese | Danny's Universe

If you are a cheese lover like me, I have a recommendation for you!

There is a place in the middle of Missouri that makes, and sells a huge variety of cheese.

Osceola Cheese Co. is located about half way between Kansas City and Springfield, on Highway 13.

I have been stopping in to see my friends there for many years.  Not only is the staff friendly, and helpful, but they always seem to be smiling, and who wouldn't be smiling... They're in Cheese Heaven!

This place might seem like it is out in the middle of nowhere, but they sit right on the very busy highway 13.

They entice travelers with their many billboards boasting of several clean restrooms, a gift shop, and FREE cheese samples.

A Little History
In 1944, Riverview Cheese was founded.  (The name was later changed.)  The original location was in downtown Osceola.

By 1946, a new building was built on the north side of the river.  The business kept growing.  It seemed that everyone wanted their cheese!
At that time, they had 15 trucks on the road, 24 hours a day collecting milk.  The milk came from more than 1,000 dairy farms all across Missouri.

The 1960s were a time of change. There was talk of Truman Lake, and much more happening in the region.

The area's growth included an increasing number of folks starting to visit Branson to the south.

Silver Dollar City had opened their doors in May of 1960, and more businesses were being planned.

Midway through the decade, the cheese company began planning to relocate once again.

In August of 1964 the construction of Truman Lake (originally called Kaysinger Bluff Dam and Reservoir) began.

In 1968 the cheese company relocated to their present Hwy. 13 retail location.  It was at that time the name was changed from Riverview Cheese to Osceola Cheese Company.

Throughout the years, there have been many changes and innovations.  Osceola Cheese Co. has been a favorite place of mine for as far back as I can remember.

What's it like?
When you pull into parking lot, one of the things you are sure to notice first is a giant mouse sitting on a block of cheese in front of the store.

Placement of the mouse was a work of genius!  He (or she?) is perfect for picture-taking opportunities.  You can see some of the pictures on their social media channels.

Every time I enter the store, I immediately notice is that it feels good.  I mean, they have the temperature set perfectly.

On a hot summer day, it so refreshing to walk into a cool store!

As I mentioned, they have a delightful gift shop at one end of the store.  They offer plenty of nice things to see and purchase, as well as traditional souvenirs.

Some of the items they offer are:
  • Home Décor
  • Wallets
  • Ceramic Coffee Mugs
  • Soy Wax Candles
  • Country Towels
  • Absorbent Stone Coasters
  • Tempered Glass Cutting Boards
  • and much more

It is all displayed in a very pleasant and professional way.

The Rest of the Store
At the other end of the store is the pièce de résistance... CHEESE!

Before I discuss the cheese though, I should point out, there is a lot more than just cheese available to purchase.

In my Osceola Cheese video, I mention that it's like an old-time variety store with the best cheese ever.

They have a wall of T-shirts, and other apparel (with their mouse & cheese logo) for those of us who want to show our Osceola pride.

Osceola Cheese Co. also offers:
  • Watkin's products
  • Honey (various sizes)
  • Steak Sauce
  • BBQ Sauce
  • Hot Sauce
  • Mustards,
  • Jams, Jellies & Preserves
  • Sorghum,
  • Ready-to-Eat Summer Sausage
  • Chips
  • Candy
  • Nuts
  • Today's Top Soft Drinks
  • Old school beverages like Sarsaparilla, Cream Soda, Glass Bottled Root Beer and more.  They also have their own labeled water.

The Cheese
The main attraction is by far the cheese.  Osceola Cheese offers more than 275 variations of this delightful delicacy.

Various sizes are available, and they offer samples of many of their most popular cheeses.

My tastes tend to lean more to the spicier varieties.  I prefer the peppered flavors, Chipotle, Ghost Pepper etc.

I also enjoy the Taco flavored cheese, Pepperoni, Swiss N Rye, and... Let's face it, I like it all!  Click here to learn more about the types of cheese they offer.

Although I have only tried it once, they even offer a chocolate variety!

Etiquette Tip for Sampling
1.  Use one of the provided toothpicks
2.  Poke a cube of your selected cheese (located in the lidded cups).
3.  DO NOT put the toothpick in your mouth.  Instead pull the cube off of the pick with you other hand, and savor the goodness.
